Workshops from the ground

Umlilo nomhlaba

Fire and earth. Intimate material workshops rooted in gathered soils, plant fibers, and raw mineral pigments at the foot of Mbayiyane.

Raw gathered earth

Gathered ochre and crushed stone

We do not buy pigment in tubes; we dig ochre from the hillside and crush it understone for every session.

Five elemental materials

The five workshop shelves

Each session opens one drawer of raw material gathered directly from the surrounding land.

Paint from earth

Wood charcoal

Plant paper

Pigment dug from soil and ground understone. Ochre, clay red, and charcoal black without synthetic additives.

Local timber burned quietly in kiln glow, creating drawing sticks that hold the natural grain of the wood.

Fibers beaten from wild plants into deckled sheets with visible seeds and stems embedded in the surface.

At the foot of Mbayiyane

Rooted in Mbayiyane earth

The surrounding landscape provides every raw element. Riverbank clay beds, forest charcoal, wild plant stems, and botanical leaves are gathered by hand with quiet care.
